Slope Requirements
- Minimum slope away from structure: 1/4" per foot (2% grade). This is the absolute minimum for water drainage.
- Recommended slope: 3/8" to 1/2" per foot. A 4-foot apron should drop 1.5–2 inches from the garage floor to the driveway.
- Maximum slope: 1" per foot for vehicle traffic. Steeper than that and cars may scrape.
- Cross-slope: In addition to the primary slope away from the structure, add a slight cross-slope (1/8" per foot) toward one side if there's a drain or swale.
Drainage Details
- Transition to driveway: The apron-to-driveway joint must be smooth with no lip or reverse slope that could pond water. Saw-cut the control joint at this transition — don't just tool it.
- Garage floor transition: The apron should be 1/2" to 1" below the garage floor elevation. Never pour an apron flush with or above the garage floor — it guarantees water intrusion.

Installation Best Practices

1. Demolition (if replacing)
Break up the existing apron with a skid steer breaker attachment or jackhammer. A mini excavator with a hydraulic breaker is most efficient for slabs over 6" thick. Load debris directly into a dump trailer or dumpster. Remove all old concrete — don't leave chunks in the subgrade as "fill." Old concrete pieces under a new slab create void spaces that lead to cracking.
2. Excavation & Subgrade Prep
Excavate to the required depth: slab thickness + base material. For a 5" apron on 4" of gravel base, you need 9" of total excavation below the finished grade. Check the subgrade for soft spots, organics, and debris. Any soft material must be removed and replaced with compactible fill.
Compact the subgrade with a plate compactor. If the native soil is clay or silty, add 4–6" of compacted crushed stone (Class 5 or similar) as a base course. Compact in 2" lifts to 95% standard Proctor density. This is the step most contractors skip — and it's the primary reason aprons settle and crack within 2–3 years.
3. Forming
Set forms to the designed slope and elevation. For garage aprons, the form closest to the garage should be set at the target elevation (typically 1/2–1" below the garage floor). The outer form follows the driveway elevation. Use 2×6 or 2×8 lumber for forms — 2×4s flex too easily on apron pours where you need tight elevation control.
Stake forms every 2 feet and check elevations with a string line or laser. The slope must be consistent — any low spots will pond water.
4. Reinforcement
Place rebar or wire mesh on chairs (dobies) so the steel sits in the lower third of the slab — typically 1.5–2" from the bottom. For a 5" apron, place the rebar at 1.5" from the bottom. Overlap wire mesh panels by 6" minimum and tie at overlaps. If using rebar, tie all intersections with wire ties.
For driveway aprons connecting to existing concrete, drill and epoxy dowel rebar into the existing slab to create a mechanical connection. Use #4 rebar dowels at 12" on center, drilled 4" into the existing concrete and extending 12" into the new pour.
5. Pour & Finish
Order concrete with the correct mix design (4,000+ PSI, air-entrained in cold climates). Pour and screed to the form tops, maintaining the designed slope. Bull float immediately after screeding. Wait for bleed water to evaporate before finishing.
For broom-finish aprons, apply a medium broom texture perpendicular to the direction of vehicle travel. The texture provides traction and hides minor surface imperfections. For a cleaner look, use a hand trowel followed by a light broom.
Cut control joints within 4–12 hours of placement (or use crack-control tooling during finishing). On a 10×12 ft apron, one control joint across the middle is typically sufficient. Maximum panel size is 10–12 feet in any direction.
6. Curing
Apply curing compound immediately after finishing, or cover with wet burlap and plastic for 7 days. Proper curing is especially important for aprons because they're exposed to weather and vehicle loads early. Don't let the customer drive on the apron for at least 7 days (14 days for heavy vehicles). Post a sign or tape off the area.

Settlement
The most common apron problem. The apron sinks relative to the garage floor, creating a lip that catches car bumpers and pools water. Caused by poorly compacted backfill soil around the foundation. Fix options: foam leveling ($500–$1,500) or full replacement ($800–$3,000).
Cracking
Control cracks (at saw cuts or tooled joints) are normal and expected. Random cracking indicates a structural issue — usually insufficient thickness, no reinforcement, poor subgrade, or an overloaded slab. Spalling & Surface Deterioration

Water Intrusion at Garage

Heaving
In cold climates, frost heave can push the apron up — sometimes several inches — especially if the subgrade retains water.
