Concrete vs. Pavers: Which is Better for Your Project?
Concrete costs $6-$18/sqft and pavers cost $12-$30/sqft installed. Concrete is cheaper and lower maintenance. Pavers are more expensive but easier to repair. Here's when to choose each.

Cost Comparison
Plain concrete: $6-10/sqft. Stamped concrete: $12-18/sqft. Concrete pavers: $12-25/sqft. Natural stone pavers: $20-40/sqft. For a 400 sqft patio: concrete $2,400-$7,200, pavers $4,800-$16,000. Concrete is consistently cheaper for the same visual effect.
Installation Time
Concrete: 1-2 days for a typical patio (pour, finish, cure). Pavers: 3-5 days (excavate, base prep, sand, lay pavers, polymeric sand, compaction). Concrete is faster to install but requires a 7-28 day cure. Pavers are usable immediately after installation.
Maintenance
Concrete: seal every 3-5 years ($0.50-1/sqft), crack repair as needed. Very low maintenance. Pavers: re-level shifted pavers, refill polymeric sand, weed control between joints, occasional re-compaction. Higher ongoing maintenance. Annual cost: concrete $50-100, pavers $100-300.
Repairs
Concrete: crack repair is visible — you can fill cracks but the repair shows. Major damage requires removing and repouring entire sections. Pavers: pull out damaged pavers and replace individually ($5-15 per paver). This is pavers' biggest advantage — easy, invisible repairs.
When to Choose Each
Choose concrete if: budget is a priority, you want low maintenance, you like a seamless look, or the area gets heavy vehicle traffic. Choose pavers if: you want easy future repairs, premium appearance matters, the area may need underground access (utilities, plumbing), or you prefer a traditional look.
