New Basement Floor Pour Process

If installing a French drain system, lay the perforated pipe in gravel along the perimeter at this stage.

Step 4: Radon Mitigation Rough-In

Install the sub-slab radon vent pipe before the vapor barrier. A 4" Schedule 40 PVC pipe with a T-fitting sits in the gravel bed, with the vertical riser penetrating through the future slab location and eventually running up through the house to vent above the roof. Install this now — retrofitting later means coring through the finished slab.

Step 5: Vapor Barrier

Lay the vapor barrier (10–15 mil polyethylene, Stego Wrap preferred) over the entire gravel base. Overlap seams by 6" minimum and tape with vapor barrier tape. Run the barrier up the walls 3–4" above the finished floor level and seal to the foundation walls with acoustic sealant. Step 6: Reinforcement

Install welded wire mesh (6x6 W2.9) on chairs at mid-slab height, or place #3 rebar at 24" on center both ways. Step 7: Pour and Finish

Place concrete (typically pumped via line pump through a basement window or bulkhead), screed to grade, and finish to the desired texture. Basement-specific challenge: Access. Getting a concrete pump truck close enough to reach the basement is the main logistical challenge.
